It's Monday What Are You Reading: Books, Movies, Doctor Who Goodness & Other Random Stuff

The holidays are behind us, and we're dismantling the Christmas tree and inching toward getting back into a routine. Trisha celebrated her 9th birthday, and she received an Amazon gift certificate which she used for these Doctor Who action figures. Being a big fan of the show, she figured these would make for some good "plays."

Disregard the craptasticly messy movie shelf. And yes, it's normal for our house to look like it's inhabited by a pack of wolves ... why do you ask?
Seriously, how cool is this kid?? :-)

And how hard do you think it would be to make a Tardis out of a shoebox? I think that'll be Homeschool Project #1 of the new year. You've gotta admit ... WAY cooler than a diorama.

It's Monday, What Are You Reading? hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

Special Request: We're looking at ways to improve the content of this blog in the new year, and I'd be most grateful if you'd hop over here and respond to our reader questionnaire, if you haven't done so already. I am loving the suggestions and comments we've gotten so far. :-)

Posts This Week:

Checking in on Wednesday -- Awards, Interesting Facts About Me, and Stuff -- My first "real" job (journalist), experience with exhibitionists, worst pick-up line, my personal connection to O Brother, Where Art Thou, and other random crap about myself.

Film Review: Some Mother's Son

Film Review: Caché

Other Movies I Watched:

Horrible Bosses (rewatch): One of my guilty pleasures

Looper (4.5/5 stars): Better than I'd expected. Of course, I'm an easy sell for a movie like this. Memories and time travel are two themes that fascinate me. I do love the wibbledy wobbledy timey wimey stuff.

Three Kings (4.5/5 stars): Blend of action and drama set at the end of Operation Desert Storm.  Excellent -- I've never seen anything like it. Recommended by Alex. I will probably post about this soon -- it'll be something a little different from a traditional movie review.

Pulp Fiction (5/5): This is my husband's and my go-to movie when we need something to cheer us up. Yes, really. I know how freaking sick that sounds, and I don't care. ;-)

ParaNorman (3.5/5): O.K. movie. Had good kid entertainment value in our house.

Upcoming Posts:

Sarah, my daughter &  co-blogger, is working on a list of her 101 Favorite Movies -- it will be posted soon. Some of her favorite films will be familiar to most readers and some are quite obscure.

This week, I will share my 5/5 star review of Flesh by Khanh Ha and my interview with the author.
from Goodreads: The setting is Tonkin (northern Vietnam) at the turn of the 20th century. A boy, Tai, witnesses the beheading of his father, a notorious bandit, and sets out to recover his head and then to find the man who betrayed his father to the authorities. On this quest, Tai’s entire world will shift. FLESH takes the reader into dark and delightful places in the human condition, places where allies are not always your friends, true love hurts, and your worst enemy may bring you the most comfort. In that emotionally harrowing world, Tai must learn to deal with new responsibilities in his life while at the same time acknowledging his bond, and his resemblance, to a man he barely knew--his father.

Currently Reading:

Case Histories (Jackson Brodie #1) by Kate Atkinson -- This was recommended by numerous book bloggers, including Wendy at Musings of a Bookish Kitty. I am really liking it so far.
From Goodreads:

Case one: A little girl goes missing in the night.

Case two: A beautiful young office worker falls victim to a maniac's apparently random attack.

Case three: A new mother finds herself trapped in a hell of her own making - with a very needy baby and a very demanding husband - until a fit of rage creates a grisly, bloody escape.

Thirty years after the first incident, as private investigator Jackson Brodie begins investigating all three cases, startling connections and discoveries emerge.
Books & Movies I'll Dive Into Soon:

My Journey as a Combat Medic: From Desert Storm to Operation Enduring Freedom by Patrick Thibeault

No Country for Old Men and/or The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Oranges and Sunshine -- Emily Watson. Do I need any other reason?

12 Angry Men -- I read the play in high school, and I keep asking myself, why have I not seen this movie yet???

OC87: The Obsessive Compulsive, Major Depression, Bipolar, Asperger’s Movie

Mulholland Drive

Naked

Declaration of War

The Kid With a Bike

  2. Pulp Fiction is one of my most favorite movies of all time!!! And I loved Looper!! I love the whole diorama thing … but a Tardis sounds cool too (even though I don't know what it is really …. not being a Dr. Who fan.)

  3. Your daughter is a genius. Dr. Who figurines are an excellent use of a gift card. Did you see the Christmas special? What did you think?

I have to pick up the second Jackson Brodie from the library tomorrow. I enjoyed the first one and I'm interested to see what Atkinson goes next!

    1. I haven't seen the Doctor Who Christmas Special, since we don't get BBC. I'll see it when it finally comes to Netflix. I heard the new companion is quite good, and the actress has chemistry with Matt Smith.

  5. If you watch 12 Angry Men, look for the orignal it is so much better than all of the remakes that have been done.

  6. Is it weird that I always try to identify some of the DVD titles in photos like this? :)

Glad to hear you'll be watching 12 Angry Men, Mulhollland Drive, Naked, Declaration of War, and The Kid With a Bike. I highly recommend all of them.

    1. I don't know if it's weird, but I do the same thing! When I see a photo of someone's house, I am always trying to read the movie and book titles in the background.

It looks like you highly recommend all but two of the movies I listed (and OC87 is an obscure documentary that appeals to me because I have a particular interest in the subject). That is definitely a good sign!

  7. Now I want to make a Tardis out of a shoebox too.

  9. Horrible Bosses surprised me. I was not expecting it to be as hilarious as it was. Jason Bateman gets me every time. Love his deadpan humor.

Looper was one of my favourite films from last year. Gets better on repeat viewings.

Have got 12 Angry Men on my to-watch list for the year. Been told off for not having seen it!

  10. Haha, I watch Pulp Fiction whenever I need to be cheered up too! It's such a funny movie and it's one of my favorites - all of my favorites even the ghastly ones cheer me up because it's always great to see fantastic movie.

I can't wait for your thoughts on Mulholland Drive, it's my second favorite movie of all time.

  12. Happy birthday to your daughter! I think Dr. Who action figures are a fun idea! I can't wait to read your thoughts on Three Kings. I hated Pulp Fiction when I first saw it, but loved it the second time around. Go figure. It's a fun movie.

I am glad you are liking Case Histories so far! It's a different sort of mystery, which I liked.

I plan to read and watch The Road this year. I've put off seeing the movie so I could read the book. Thought maybe it was time. :-)

  13. Whoaa she has a dalek!! cool! I think making Tardis from a shoebox is quite easy, the coloring is the most important part.
What else does she have apart from dalek?

I have Paranorman ready to be watched, hope I can enjoy it
